Why We Still Need SEO

1287369 seo Why We Still Need SEOThere has been a lot of changes to the web and search marketing over the past year. A couple of major updates in the algorithm from Google, some new UI features on both Bing and Google, as well as the emerging new trends in social and real time search has made keeping up on search optimization even more difficult and hard to predict.  In addition, Google has announced that they are cleaning house even more and clearing out sites that considered content farms, as well as putting more emphasis and unique relevant content. They say that they are now able to detect unique content even better and that all a person has to do is put out good original content and according to Google they will get ranked for it. With all of this going on, why do we still need SEO anymore. Continue reading

What Tools Are Required For SEO

383157 online phone 150x150 What Tools Are Required For SEOSEO tools, which ones do you buy? I have been asked this question many times. When you have a site ranking high in the search engines you get asked these little questions. I use a whole list of tools so I can’t share them all, but I will tell you some main tools you need to get started in SEO and to start moving your site up. Once you start moving you can buy more expensive tools.

The first tool I use any time I am doing any SEO project is a keyword tool. There are tools like Good Keywords, The Google Adwords Keyword Tool and even Wordtracker. I really think anything in terms of keyword research that you pay for is a waste of money. All I look for is how many searches a term gets a month, then from there I can decide if I want to spend the time targeting it or not. Continue reading

Search Evolution – Is Search Evolving Again

social sites 150x150 Search Evolution Is Search Evolving AgainEvery few years there are some changes in the search market and alter not only the way people search, but where they search at and how they search.  This search evolution has taken place several times already and it appears that we are heading for a new one.

Look at the early 90′s, when the first engines or search platforms were being produced. At that time, people just looked at categories and then selected links they liked within that space. This was the norm for a couple of years as sites like Yahoo and Excite were first started. These early engines didn’t even have a search interface to allow people to type in their own keywords. Higher PageRank Does Not Mean Higher Traffic

I’ve been doing research on blogs and websites for years. I’ve seen websites that have no PageRank gain first page rankings and lots of traffic and sites that have PR3 or more that get no rankings and very little organic traffic. With this in mind, there is no evidence that suggests a higher PageRank will mean higher traffic, and in fact Google themselves even stated that site owners should not concentrate on PageRank but rather than building quality pages and content.

The use of PageRank is a Google invention and is not shared on other search engines.  Since Google carries over 60% of the overall search market many people consider this number to a primary factor in the rankings of a website. Although this may seem true in some cases, as you can do searches and if you have a Google toolbar the PageRank is displayed, and may notice that some of the tops sites coming up have higher PageRank. Go Bing Yourself Google

165838 bing day one 350 150x150 Go Bing Yourself GoogleMicrosoft’s new search engine, or decision engine as they call it in the advertising, Bing was launched last week with some fanfare.  In addition, Microsoft has started an aggressive marketing campaign to get people familiar with it.  I for one was excited about it and ready for it to launch as I’ve been reading more about it over the past few month. Originally called Kumo, the launch of Bing last week was somewhat of a surprised, but welcomed.  The following are some of my thoughts about Bing, it’s search, and how it compares to Google.

In addition, I must say that I’ve now changed all of my default searches to Bing as I felt I was getting more of the Internet in a better way, than I was getting with Google and their controlled net.  I look at Google now the way I looked at AOL ten years ago. If you want to search the full Internet you can’t do it on Google, as they have restricted, blocked, and penalized any site that they didn’t like. Continue reading

istock 000001524388xsmall 150x150 Waiting For Wolfy and Kumo Search EnginesThere has been so much hype on both of these new search engines that it’s getting to be too much.  I’ve been hearing about them for almost a year now, and yet, we still wait. Both engines are expected to be released this month, but there has been no official announcement and both sites are still not functioning.  To take a step back, let’s explain what they are, and why the hype.

Kumo – http://kumo.com

This is Microsoft’s next attempt at beating Google. They are redoing their Live search, and adding more features, as well as re-branding it into Kumo. Continue reading
